Apprentices
Julien has helped educate many apprentices over the years, including the early days of Brenton Avdulla, Patrick Moloney and Michael Poy. There are two apprentices currently at Booralite Park, namely Carleen Hefel & Bailey Kinninmont.
Carleen Hefel
is also the foreperson at Booralite Park and assists Julien in breaking in and educating the young horses. She rides all Booralite Park's horses in trials and jump outs as well as for other trainers such as Robbie Griffiths & Enver Jusufovic at Cranbourne.
Carleen has now had nearly 400 rides for 44 winners since beginning her apprenticeship as a mature-age (30 y.o.!) rider. She was recently awarded the Mary McCullough Apprentice of the Year Award at the Lady In Racing event in March 2020 for her achievements.
Her first ride ever was on Quenton (J Welsh) at Moe on the 27th June 2019, with a 4th place. Her second ride ever was on Infuential Girl for Robbie Griffiths the same day and she notched up her first winner! Her biggest win to date is on Don't Doubt Dory in the Stony Creek Cup on the 8th of March 2020, trained by Julien. She has also notched up another milestone with her first metropolitan ride on Without Excuse at Sandown for Lenny Xeureb on the 3rd of June 2020.
Bailey Kinninmont
Bailey hails from Perth and is from a racing family. His father, Damien, is the Head Starter in Singapore and his mother, Kelly, is foreperson for Simon Miller in Perth. Bailey didn't get on a horse until he moved over to Booralite Park two years ago and this year he was accepted into the Apprentice Jockey program at Racing Victoria. Bailey is now regularly riding in official trials at Cranbourne. He has worked very hard to get where he is now and is totally committed to becoming a jockey.
